The lid of the master cylinder reservoir must allow pressure to equalize as the brake fluid level drops without allowing air into the system. This is accomplished by a rubber diaphragm in the cap or a lid that can telescope into the reservoir. A small hole above the diaphragm allows air to enter through the cap or lid.
Be sure to push the rubber lid or cap seal back into its original position when the lid is removed for inspection or refilling of the fluid. Failure to do this causes fluid to spill over when the lid or cap is installed.
The lid or cap on the reservoir has a telescopic rubber seal under it. This seal allows air to be above it from a pinhole in the lid and fluid to move freely into the system below it without air being exposed to the fluid. When refilling the master cylinder, be sure to compress the telescopic seal into place so that it can extend again when the fluid is used by the system. Do not overfill the reservoir.
If the fluid cannot expand due to the reservoir being overfilled when the system heats up, the brakes may drag or lock on as a result.
If the reservoir cap gasket is swollen, it is likely that someone mistakenly poured motor oil, transmission fluid, or some other petroleum-based fluid into the master cylinder.
To test the fluid, fill a cup or baby food jar with water and put about one teaspoon of fluid from the suspect master cylinder reservoir into the water and mix. Let it sit about one hour and then look for any film on the top of the water. Pure brake fluid mixes with the water and leaves no residue or film on the top of the sample (except for DOT 5 silicone fluid, which is purple).
